Renter Policies and Protection

Last updated September 2024

When you rent a vehicle from GoCamp, the most important rule is that you have fun! See the Policies for renters below for the less fun, but equally important rules. And please note, by booking a vehicle through GoCamp, you agree to the GoCamp Terms of Service and all terms and conditions defined in the rental contract you enter into with the individual owner.

VAN LISTINGS

GoCamp is dedicated to maintaining precise vehicle listings. While every possible effort is made to ensure accuracy, the renter should verify the information provided during van pick-up. The renter may report any disparities identified during the check-in or walkthrough process to GoCamp. Van owners are required to promptly notify GoCamp of any updates regarding their vehicles, including safety modifications, features and functions, and any other changes that pertain to and are reflected in the van’s listing.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE
You pay 50% of the total rental fee at the time of booking. You pay the remainder 14 days before the rental begins. If booking less than 14 days in advance, you pay the entire fee at the time of booking.

If you add a day to your trip after making your reservation, GoCamp will charge you the nightly rate and service fee, plus tax, insurance, and roadside assistance. If a day is subtracted, we’ll refund the nightly fee, tax, insurance, and roadside assistance. The service fee will not be refunded. If a day is subtracted and you no longer meet the minimum night requirement, we will only refund insurance and roadside assistance. The nightly fee and tax will remain.

TAXES AND FEES
Rentals are subject to county and rental car taxes which vary by location. All reservations include a prep fee, which typically consists of a cleaning fee and driver verification. Renters outside of the United States may be subject to an international credit card processing fee. All reservations will include up to a 14% service fee for administrative costs. Additional fees may apply if you incur parking tickets, traffic violations, tolls, return the vehicle late, etc. or as further described in these Renter Policies or in the GoCamp Terms of Service.

SECURITY DEPOSIT
Four days before your trip begins, we will place an authority to charge (usually $1,000 – $1,500, depending on the owner’s listing requirements) on the credit card on file as a security deposit. This is not actually a charge. No funds will leave your account. The exact amount of the security deposit will be stated in your Booking Details. We may use your security deposit to pay any amount owed for the booking. Upon your return, we deduct costs for minor damage, as relevant, and applicable fees (fuel, mileage charges and post-trip charges,) and then we remove the hold on your card. This typically takes place within seven days of your return.

Minimum requirements for return of the security deposit include the following: the vehicle is returned cleaned to the same condition or better than when it was first picked up; fuel levels are equal to or above the level provided at the time of departure handoff; holding tanks are properly emptied to or below the level at time of departure handoff; no damage is sustained to the vehicle (including interior damage) and all variable charges including, mileage or generator overages, tolls, parking or other tickets are paid in full.

If the amount of the security deposit is insufficient to satisfy all amounts due, you will pay all charges in excess, either by use of the credit card provided or some other agreed upon payment method. To the extent that a security deposit is insufficient to cover damages or other expenses that you incur, you will pay the owner the difference.

GoCamp reserves the right to extend the duration of the security deposit pre-authorization beyond the initial 7-day post-rental period, thus extending the timeframe for post-trip charges when necessary. These circumstances include, but are not limited to, situations where owners encounter difficulty in promptly accessing the vehicle or the van is situated in a different state due to a mechanical breakdown, accident, or comparable events. Owners are allowed a reasonable timeframe (3-4 weeks) to assess damages, mileage, post-trip charges and coordinate van retrieval.

MILEAGE ALLOWANCE
125 miles per night is included in every rental. Additional miles are charged at rates between 35 cents to $1 per mile, depending on the vehicle. For example, on a four night rental, you will have 500 free miles. If you traveled 600 miles, at 35 cents a mile, you would pay an additional $35 at the end of your trip. A service fee is also applied to mileage charges.

FUEL
Your Vehicle should have a full tank of gas when you pick it up. Please make sure to fill it back up to the level provided at the time of departure handoff before you return it. Alternatively, the Owner will refuel it for you at the rate stated on the Booking Details.

DRIVING FINES, TOLLS AND FEES
You are responsible for any parking tickets, violations, fines, tolls, or campground registration fees, plus taxes, surcharges and administrative fees. These costs are typically deducted from your security deposit.

CANCELLATIONS
Cancel at least 30 days before check-in, you will receive a 100% refund. Cancel between 14 and 30 days before check-in, you will receive a 50% refund. Cancel less than 14 days before check-in, you will not receive a refund.

There are no refunds for shortened trips if for some reason (e.g. weather, change in schedule) you return the vehicle early. If we cancel the reservation you will receive a full refund.

DRIVERS
We (or a third-party on our behalf) do a verification on all drivers to ensure you meet minimum requirements as described in the GoCamp Terms of Service. Driver verifications include identity verification, driving history check, and criminal background check. You must start your driver verification within 48 hours of completing your booking. If you fail the driver verification check, you will be denied access to renting and will receive a full refund. Your license must be valid throughout the duration of your rental. Failure to start your driver verification in a timely manner may result in the standard cancellation being applied.

If several people intend to drive the vehicle, all must go through, and pass, the driver verification. A valid driver’s license must be presented by all drivers when you pick up the vehicle.

You must be at least 25 years of age to rent a GoCamp van. Occasionally van owners will make an exception to this rule for responsible young adults with clean driving records. We reserve the right to cancel any booking made by renters under the age of 25 who didn’t first receive explicit permission to book.

CONDUCT WHILE DRIVING
You agree to never drive in a careless or negligent manner while driving a GoCamp vehicle, nor to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, nor permit operation of the vehicle by any person except those on the signed agreement.

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS
We want you to go have the adventure of your life, but we don’t want you to take GoCamp vans off-road.

Most of the vehicles listed with GoCamp are not appropriate for unimproved roads, 4×4 tracks, thick mud, wet or heavy sand, heavily washboarded or pot hole laden roads. The vehicles listed with GoCamp are great for paved roads and established campgrounds. Unpaved state and federal forest roads are permitted as long as they are maintained and well-graded. Exercise caution and good judgment when traveling on such roads, and when in doubt, either drive very slowly or turn around. If you do venture off-road and end up stuck or damage the van in any way, you will be responsible for any damages to the vehicle and all costs associated with any necessary towing or other expenses that result from your going off-road.

Travel is restricted to the US and Canada. Travel to Mexico is prohibited.

Travel to Burning Man is strictly prohibited. If you take a Vehicle to Burning Man, the entire security deposit may be forfeited, the Protection Plan may not be usable, and an additional fee of up to $5,000 may apply to cover the additional costs and expenses related to taking a Vehicle to Burning Man. See the GoCamp Terms of Use for additional Prohibited Uses.

Awnings. Some vehicles are equipped with awnings. Awning usage may be restricted by owners. If an owner does not provide express consent to use the awning during the rental period, and the awning is damaged during the rental period or causes damage to a third party, you will be wholly responsible for the full cost of repair and damages.

PROTECTION PLAN
Because peer-to-peer rentals have their own unique insurance requirements, purchase of GoCamp’s Protection Plan is mandatory. Subject to your compliance with our Terms of Service, our Protection Plan provides State Minimum liability coverage to renters and comp and collision coverage of up to $275,000, subject to a $2,500 deductible for which you will be responsible. The fee for the Protection Plan starts at $49.50 / night. Price varies by vehicle and will be provided at the time of booking.

In the event of an accident while on the road, the renter is required to use GoCamp’s Protection Plan for insurance coverage. Currently, GoCamp does not allow renters to use their own personal policies for coverage in a GoCamp rented vehicle. Renters agree to use the GoCamp Protection Plan purchased at the time of booking. Please review our Terms of Service for exclusions and terms of GoCamp’s Protection Plan.

ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE

Protection Plans provided through GoCamp do not include 24-hour roadside assistance. Roadside assistance coverage, provided by a third-party provider, can be purchased at the time of booking. If you purchase Roadside Assistance, after booking with GoCamp, Coach-Net will email you your Roadside Assistance membership card and provide policy documentation. If you do not receive that email, please contact GoCamp’s team for assistance.

Please note that our coverage includes assistance for one incident per reservation. This means that only one issue will be covered. In some cases, there may still be out-of-pocket costs for parts or labor, depending on the situation. Common scenarios covered include towing, flat tire assistance, emergency fluids delivery, battery boost, and assistance from a mobile mechanic. Our roadside assistance is for coverage related to mechanical issues, not accidents. Please refer to the Coach-Net policy documents if you purchase Roadside coverage through GoCamp. Contact Coach-Net directly with any questions you have.

It’s important to note that if you don’t have 24-hour roadside assistance, you will need to cover the costs for issues that are typically covered by roadside assistance (such as a flat tire, dead battery, towing, or running out of gas) during your rental. If the accident results in disruption of your trip, you are responsible for any lodging, transportation, or food costs while the vehicle is out of service.

RENTER RESPONSIBILITIES REGARDING MAINTENANCE OF THE VEHICLE
You are responsible for checking all fluid levels, including oil and coolant levels at each refueling. You are also responsible for checking air tire pressure, lug nuts and wheels at each refueling. You are responsible for mechanical damage due to negligence in operation and/or maintenance.

MAJOR DAMAGES OR COLLISIONS
If you are in an accident, please call the owner and GoCamp as soon as it is safe to do so. If the accident involves other drivers, please be sure to get the license and insurance information of everyone involved. You should also plan on calling the local authorities to report the accident. If the accident results in disruption of your trip, you are responsible for any lodging, transportation, or food costs while the vehicle is out of service. Accidents typically result in an insurance claim. The Protection Plan you purchase as part of your rental should apply (as long as you have complied with the GoCamp Terms of Service, your rental agreement, and these Policies); recall that there is a $2,500 deductible for comp and collision on GoCamp’s policy

MECHANICAL FAILURES
If you experience a mechanical failure, please call the Owner as soon as possible to report and discuss the issue. The owner will do their best to have the vehicle repaired in a timely manner by a repair facility close to the breakdown location and should be able to get you back on the road relatively quickly. Renters must receive owner approval and consent for any repairs that are needed. For breakdowns that last 24 hours or longer, we agree to refund the daily rental rate for the amount of time the van is out of service. You are responsible for any lodging, transportation, or food costs while the vehicle is out of service. GoCamp AL LLC’s liability is limited to refunding your rental fees as detailed above.

If the mechanical failure is due to no fault of yours (e.g., the timing belt breaks) the individual Owner will be responsible for paying for the cost of the repair, as well as recovery of the vehicle, if required. Owners may choose to reimburse or credit the renter for repair costs. Owners may also elect to credit or refund ancillary renter costs during a repair, yet this is at the owner’s sole discretion. If it is determined that the mechanical failure is the result of your (or an additional driver’s) negligence (e.g., you failed to check the oil levels) or inappropriate driving (e.g. you overheated the engine by trying to go 80 miles an hour over a mountain pass), you will be held responsible for covering the cost of the repair and recovery.

In the unlikely event that something happens, we’ll do everything we can to get you back on the road so you can keep enjoying your adventure.

MINOR SCRAPES, DINGS AND DAMAGE
Things happen. If you are driving along and a rock dings the windshield, you are responsible for any costs associated with fixing the windshield. This is true of any small ding, scratch, or minor damage to the vehicle. You’ll do a walk around with the owner before checking out the vehicle, and another upon return of the vehicle. The cost to repair minor scrapes, dings and damages will be deducted from your security deposit.

REIMBURSEMENTS/REFUND REQUESTS
Renters are required to promptly report any issues during the van rental period, this includes submitting reimbursement requests for expenses incurred, and requests for refunds within seven days of returning the vehicle. Claims or refund requests made outside of this specified timeframe may not receive reimbursement or refunds from the van owner or GoCamp.

PETS
See individual Vehicle Listings for specifics on pets. Some owners allow pets for an additional $125 fee, others do not. If you fail to declare a pet in advance, you will still be charged a pet fee which will be deducted from your security deposit. Service animals (as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act) are permitted in all vehicles at no additional cost (unless the service animal damages the vehicle or causes extra cleaning).

SMOKING
Please do not smoke or vape cigarettes, tobacco, marijuana, or anything else in the vehicles. An additional cleaning fee of $200 may be applied at the owner’s discretion.

PICK UP AND DROP OFF
There is no set pick up and drop off time. You’ll make arrangements suited to your needs and schedule with individual Owners. At pick up, you’ll receive a detailed orientation to the Vehicle. Plan on about an hour to finalize paperwork and fully acquaint yourself with the Vehicle.

The rental period is generally considered to be 24 hours. If you pick up the van at 10 am, you’ll be expected to return it by 10 am on the return day. If you would like extra time or find that you’re running late to return the van, please contact the owner, as most owners can accommodate requests for extra time. If approved by the owner, you will have the option to add a half-day, which is half of the nightly rate plus fees and taxes. Renters are permitted to add a half-day before or during their trip. If you return the van over 12 hours late, a full day (nightly rate plus fees and taxes) will be charged. If you return the van 1-12 hours late without notifying the owner or paying the half-day fee prior to return, the owner may choose to impose a $100 inconvenience fee in addition to the half-day fee.

The owner will give you instructions on preparing the vehicle for return, but generally you are asked to wash dishes, tidy up, refill the fuel tank, empty any gray water, and put soiled laundry in a laundry bag.
