Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

Wrap your mind around this: Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is home to 9,500 acres of redwood trees, including the largest old-growth coast redwood! If you haven’t spent time meandering with these ancients before, then this will be a must-stop. Plus, you’ll be right on the Smith River, the last major, undammed river in California. These gorgeous waters are a breathtaking home to an abundance of wildlife and a beautiful backdrop to your vanlife adventure. Here’s a sample five-night itinerary.

Morro Bay

Head south on the Pacific Coast Highway and you’ll be greeted by fragrant eucalyptus trees and bobbing otters in the charming coastal community of Morro Bay. Fresh seafood is what’s for dinner, of course, which you can enjoy while nestled into the comfort of your camper van rental, parked somewhere pretty in any number of drive-in camping options.

Highway One/Pacific Coast Highway

Yep. That’s it folks. You can have yourself one heck of any amazing California road trip adventure simply by cruising the Pacific Coast Highway, also known as Highway One. Spanning 600 miles from San Francisco to San Diego, this is one of the most scenic stretches of road in the world, with rugged coastline, echoes of pioneer days, and surfing villages that hold year-round appeal. Good thing you’ll be able to bring that surfboard with you in your GoCamp camper van!

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Yosemite is crowded. Lassen is way less crowded, and just as worth visiting! There are all four types of volcanoes within this 100,000-acre park, evidenced by the dramatic jagged peaks and roiling fumaroles, and the 125-degree Boiling Springs Lake. The Lassen Park Highway is the highest paved road in the Cascades and runs for 30 miles through lush and dense forest, with views of Lake Almanor. There’s enough to see and do with this park that you may just want to park it and camp out for a few days.

Angels Camp

Best known for Mark Twain’s legendary frog-jumping contest, Angels Camp will send camper van visitors on a tour through a bygone era of California’s gold rush days with the Angels Camp Museum and Carriage House, historic homes, and beautifully landscaped parks. Nearby in the Sierra foothills, campers can enjoy New Melones Lake, one of California’s largest reservoirs, for days of fishing, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, and gazing up at the stars.
